Memories that live forever !!

20131030-233238.jpg

Using this poem from movie Udaan again to express the idea and thought behind the picture.

In search of answers !!!

Postcards from Haridwar

Haridwar is regarded as one of the seven holiest places to Hindus which is an important pilgrimage city in the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, India. The River Ganga, after flowing for 250 kilometres from its source at Gaumukh at the edge of the Gangotri glacier, enters the Indo-Gangetic Plains of North India for the first time at Haridwar which gave the city its ancient name, Gangadwara.

I am posting here some of the photographs from a short visit to Haridwar.

Wooden toy shop on the streets of the city. These are small toy Dholak (two-headed hand-drum) on the display.

Streets of Haridwar | You will find such streets very common where there are many aashrams, temples side by side on a long stretch of a road.

This is one of the most common sight at the streets where you will come across plenty of saadhu’s (wandering monks). The north Indian land, particularly that of Uttarakhand is considered to be the land of mystic where many people keep wondering around such holy places in search of Moksha (nirvana) and devine knowledge.

Street side barber.

Scene from Har-ki-Pauri ghat at the time of Ganga aarti.

Devotee at Ganga aarti.

If you want to experience how the faith and belief of one of the biggest religion in the world (Hinduism) drive the human race in one of the biggest country (India) in the world, you have to visit the place and see it for yourself.

India.

What does it mean to be living in a free country? Free to chose religion, faith, livelihood. Right to equal opportunities and justice. And in a way its relatively a subjective discussion. When a country is celebrating 65th independence day, it must have seen lot many ups and downs and along the way you expect it to be mature nation, specially when it represents 1/6th of humanity.

In last 65 years we have been through a lot. Wars, fiscal problems, ethnic riots, political crisis etc. Almost everything which a country can face. Even if you are a cynic, you have to agree that we managed these things and came out everytime we were pushed to the wall. It is also true that that all is not good and its a long way to go. Lest we forget its you and me who make this nation. Lets make an attempt, not for a day or two but times to come. Lets try and leave behind a nation better than we got.

Happy Independence Day

Of dreams and hopes

Clicked this portrait at small hamlet called Kankhet on the banks of river Kosi at Jim Corbett National Park. Had the opportunity to click around the beautiful village and talk to the people there. So much innocence and hope in the eyes of this little child. I asked invariably what you want to become once you grow up? He said “cricketer”. I know he may not be mature enough to decide what it is to be like a cricketer or for that matter what it is to be like anything. But I wonder even when he will be in a position to decide what he wants to do with his life, will people, his family, the society in which he lives will allow him to become what he wants? Specially when you are from such a small place? He will be burdened by the expectations, dogma’s of society !!

A dream and hope will be killed.

We all talk about how we don’t produce Nobel laureates, Olympic winning athletes, world class scientists etc but have we ever realized that its because of “us” we don’t get all these?
